An exhibition of contemporary art, organised by Piemonte Share for SMIR, opens in Mondovì at the former Church of Saint Evasius.

Sunday, 10th July at 11am, the newly-restored church will be unveiled in all its former glory, marking at the same time the inauguration of the closing exhibition of SMIR.

Developed over a two-year period, the cultural heritage project focused on both the exterior and the interior of the building, transforming the former church into an exhibition space and cultural hub—not a post-museum, but rather an anti-museum, where art is connected directly with various aspects of the constantly evolving local socio-economic fabric.

The result is a platform for creative expression that adopts an innovative, open concept of the museum, reflecting contemporary developments in the production and circulation of art. Within this framework, the work of both the curator and the artist is shaped by the vocation to which the space is dedicated, transforming them into producer and experimenter.

In this way, the former Church of Saint Evasius, a gem of Renaissance architecture, located in Borgo di Carassone, was chosen to host experimental art initiatives that make use of new technologies.

SMIR—Multimedia Spaces for Innovation and Research is a project developed under Alcotra 2007–2013—the European operational programme for cross-border co-operation, involving the Marcovaldo Cultural Association, the City of Mondovì and the City of Embrun. Works on the old church have focused, so far, on the restoration of the roof and the sacristy, and on safety works for the façade.

Open until the 24 July, the exhibition presents three multimedia productions, produced by Piemonte Share: the installation Squatting Supermarket by Salvatore Iaconesi and Oriana Persico, the performance Into the Wood by Fabio Battistetti, and the Mondovì Web Archeology platform by Antonio Rollo.

Exhibition opening hours

10th–24th July, Friday–Sunday, 2.30–7pm.

Admission is free.

Into The Wood is an electroacoustic performance with an environmental theme that uses wood as it main source of sound for the creation of sound textures, rhythms and melodies.

Through the use of sound, Into The Wood seeks to rebuild the relationship between humans and wood. The sources of sound used for the performance consist of nature recordings taken in forests and real time microphonic renderings of firewood, a cutting board and acoustic musical instruments.

Into The Wood is a forest of sound, where the acoustic properties of wood take on a new form that lies near electronic music, while evoking at the same time ritual music.

Thanks to the creative support of the set designer Catherine Chanoux and the videomaker Silvia Poeta Paccati.

With support for SMIR this performance is an installation created in collaboration with the Carpenter Brothers Volume Mondovi.

Through Squatting Supermarket , artist Salvatore Iaconesi aka xDxD.vs.xDxD and Oriana Persico look at how our everyday lives have evolved through shopping, piercing into the pulsating heart of Market Forces.

Browsing products on shelves, choosing, paying, running up debt, being convinced and seduced, relating to places, messages and other people: shopping is an experience that fills our days, an experience constructed through images, suggestions and strategies that are all so complex that we, as final users, systematically fail to perceive them.

“Every product,” reads the artistic statement, “generates a chain reaction that propagates through the environmental, social, political, economic, technological, relational and emotional spheres. As highly complex and ramified as they are, these connections are not explicit. All too often, people are left merely with the experiential message of ‘buy this good/service, it’s designed just for you, for what you want to be.’”

The vast network of connections that form the background story of a product is made explicit and accessible, making ecosystemic, narrative and poetic use of the data tracking and manipulation techniques that corporations otherwise exploit for purely commercial and/or political ends – the cross-referencing of data from barcodes, RFID tags, credit cards and financial transactions. The stories of a product and the people who buy it erupt suddenly onto the scene, in a distributed storytelling session. The gateway to these stories lies in the logos, in shopping-based narratives.

The artists present the development of the augmented reality project that they presented in Mondovì last November, this time featuring local products from the Mondovì district.

The local businesses involved include:
- Agritruta e agrituma, San Biagio
- Cooperativa Frabosa Soprana
- Salumificio, Villanova Mondovì
- Michelis, Mondovì
- Macelleria Revelli, Monastero di Vasco
- Pasticceria Comino, Mondovì
- Salumificio Monregalese, Mondovì
- Torteria, Roburent

These are the hands-on methods used by Antonio Rollo, together with the kids at the high school Istituto Magistrale Rosa Govone, to create a web project to promote the Lombard necropoles in the province of Cuneo.
Working with the Soprintendenza per i Beni Archeologici del Piemonte, the aim of the workshop is to create an “augmented” on-line map on which the most interesting archaeological sites in the Mondovì district are marked and linked to multimedia content created by the high school pupils. Over the four-day programme, the workshop will seek to introduce pupils to the concepts and ideas that form the backbone of the Internet, along with the techniques and methods needed for putting these ideas into practice.

The SMIR programme for 2010 seeks to deepen our ties with the local territory. In relation to the works presented in 2009, our aim this year is to produce similar multimedia productions that are more firmly rooted and closely connected with the local territory and its various communities.

The programme runs from March to December, and features:

6 activities

2 events

1 exhibition

1 closing event

Modera Simona Lodi (direttore artistico SMIR/Mondovì). Partecipano: Bruno Boveri (Presidente Slow Food Piemonte) Salvatore Iaconesi e Oriana Persico (FakePress/Art is Open Source) e Tristano Iodice (ICEA).

Performance Into the Wood, Eniac

SQUATTING SUPERMARKET/Mondovì, Salvatore Iaconesi | Oriana Persico

MONDOVI’ WEB ARCHEOLOGY, Antonio Rollo

Into the Wood, Eniac

Performance Into the Wood, Eniac

22h00

SQUATTING SUPERMARKET/Mondovì, Salvatore Iaconesi | Oriana Persico

MONDOVI’ WEB ARCHEOLOGY, Antonio Rollo

Into the Wood, Eniac

The workshop Giotto’s Box, by Ennio Bertrand, is open to the general public out on the street, in particular to children, who under the guidance of the artist will explore a series of basic chemical processes. The workshop is organised in partnership with the Park of Living Art, Turin.

Ennio Bertrand guides kids through the bioactive process for producing light from natural fruit extracts. Real electric light can be produced, without batteries or electrical cables, thanks to the electrochemical reaction between natural liquids and metals that generate weak electrical current. The current is stored in a special electronic circuit until it reaches saturation point, when it produces a flash of light in a LED.

Once started up, the process continues from flash to flash, powering an incubator in which blossoms of electrical energy bloom. The digital blossoms transform the solar energy stored in fruit as it ripens into new light. Materials used in the workshop include tomatoes, lettuce, lemons and other fruit and vegetables, a centrifuge, LEDs and circuits, copper and zinc.

Conference Squatting Supermarket/Mondovì
6.00 pm Antico Palazzo di Città, Mondovì Piazza

10 p.m
Into The Wood is an electroacoustic performance with an environmental theme that uses wood as it main source of sound for the creation of sound textures, rhythms and melodies.
Through the use of sound, Into The Wood seeks to rebuild the relationship between humans and wood. The sources of sound used for the performance consist of nature recordings taken in forests and real time microphonic renderings of firewood, a cutting board and acoustic musical instruments.

Into The Wood is an electroacoustic performance with an environmental theme that uses wood as it main source of sound for the creation of sound textures, rhythms and melodies.
Originally conceived as a performance, the work is now also an installation thanks to the support of SMIR, in partnership with the cabinet-maker Falegnameria F.lli Volume of Mondovì.
The sound sources are taken from the sounds of wooden objects and instruments, reworked in real time by computers, midi controllers and microphones, as well as from specific nature recordings taken in forests.
The work showcased in the two performances held in autumn 2009, together with the interests explored by the artist in recent years, has been developed further in the installation, bringing it one step closer to perfect completion, thanks to the creative support of the set designer Catherine Chanoux and the videomaker Silvia Poeta Paccati.
The project involves the staging of a “forest”, where the artist stands at the heart of a natural microcosm, which his actions physically interact with to create sound.
Fabio Battistetti is the musician and sound designer behind Eniac. Since the 1990s, he has been working on musical productions that revolve around electronic sound. He has taken part in and conducted various different projects as a producer, live performer and component of multidisciplinary performances.
In November 2006, together with Daniele Pagliero, he founded the on-line music label Chew-Z . The aim of the project is to promote an alternative channel to distribute music free of charge, and link up similar initiatives at the both the national and international level so as t promote the growth and consolidation of a new cultural movement focused on open knowledge, available in the public domain.

All too often, people are left merely with the experiential message of ‘buy this good/service, it’s designed just for you, for what you want to be.’”
The installation is a minimalist supermarket, emphasising its structure and products and the messages that describe them.
